Abstract |

Thalassemia is a hereditary disease causing increased erythropoiesis and expansion of the bone marrow cavity. As a consequence, there is a reduction in trabecular bone tissue resulting in osteopenia/osteoporosis. Thirty patients with thalassemia were recruited in this study. There were 20 males and 10 females and their ages ranged from 15 to 33 years. A control group of 20 healthy subjects of matched age and sex were used. The patients were selected from the outpatient clinic of the blood disease section in King Abdul Aziz University hospital . Jeddah ,Saudi Arabia. The selected subjects were scanned by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry technique for BMD at L2 , L4, and total BMD, T-score at L2 , L4 and total T-score. The laboratory investigation in the form of: biochemical parameters (Ca, Mg, Ph and PTH) bone formation marker (ALP and OST) and bone resorption marker (CTX, NTX PYD and DPD) were also evaluated. The results were as follows: There was highly significant difference between both groups regarding the BMD and T-score being lower in the thalassemia group than control group. Serum Calcium levels showed highly significant decrease , phosphorus showed highly significant increase , while serum magnesium showed only significant decrease in the patients group than control group .Serum levels of PTH were highly significantly lower in patients group than control group . Bone formation marker , the levels of serum bone alkaline phosphatase was highly significant increase and osteocalcin was significant increase in patients group compared to the control group , while bone resorption marker, There was significant increase in C-terminal telopeptide and no significant difference in N-terminal telopeptide, pyridinoline cross links and deoxypyridinolone . |
