Abstract
:
The process of public hygiene and waste disposal is considered one of the major problems facing modern cities. Since our individual, economic, social, cultural and psychological lifestyles are reflected in the quantities and components of the generated waste. Not to mention also the ways we are using to deal with this waste, all are accordingly an important part of the process. Due to its importance; proper waste management can result in reducing harmful effects on the environment and public health when it’s applied to the collection, storage, transportation and disposal of the waste. In order to reduce this negative effect; it is necessary for municipalities to cooperate with each other and with members of the community to manage this waste. This descriptive exploratory study discusses the problem of individual participation and lack of awareness when dealing with municipal solid waste in Jeddah. Which is apparent in the huge amount of waste being generated from individuals, and in the way it’s being disposed of in public areas, streets and open lands. Importance of this study appears from the scarcity of Local studies dealing with this problem, thus a study like this might in the future lighten the burden off of financial and human effects that are being generated with the decline of public participation and their commitment to hygiene. This study is based on several assumptions such as lack of contact with the public and providing them with sufficient information about waste; also the failure to motivate individuals to participate and commit to public hygiene. Furthermore this study looks into several queries including the degree of satisfaction that Jeddah residents have with this issue; also the extent of the relationship between their satisfaction and their willingness to cooperate with the responsible authorities to come up with a solution. The research has been conducted on two samples, the first one contains 375 residents and the second was involving 31 staff members of the hygiene department. This will achieve several objectives such as identifying the level of satisfaction the residents have about waste management services; and its relation to their desire to participate in waste management. Also the study will help to identify the extent of using means of communication and incentives to motivate people to participate and commit in the field. Some of the most important findings of the study were that residents are not satisfied with the level of waste management services they have; which makes some of them lose the desire to participate in cleaning their environment. Moreover there is a shortage in communication, information and necessary incentives when it comes to the general public in order to drive them to cooperate and participate. The study recommended the need to improve waste management services in order to motivate individuals to participate, and to communicate with the citizens and provide them with enough information about waste management.
