The present study is descriptive and it aims at exploring and discovering the social and economic conditions of some prisoners’ families. The study is based on the social survey to collect field data that reveal the effect of imprisoning a father on the social cases of the prisoners’ families. It also aims at finding out the outcomes of imprisoning a father on the wife and children, exploring the social conditions of the prisoners’ families and finding out the types of services and assistances that are offered to the prisoners and how beneficiary they are. The study was applied to seventy families of Saudi prisoners who were detained in Briman prison in Jeddah province on conditions that the prisoner should be a father, passed more than four months in custody, and had children. The questionnaire was the main tool used to collect data as well as the prolonged interviews. The results of the study reveal that drugs are the commonest lawsuit among the prisoners’ families, as it was at the front of other lawsuits. The study shows that the prisoners always have low economic and educational level. It also shows the prisoners’ families have low economic positions, most of them reside in public popularity, and they don’t own the residence buildings but they hire them. Moreover, 40% of the prisoners’ families depend mainly on the social security in their bread living, and the responsible people for the family, during the prison term of the father, are the wife, one of the sons, or the wife’s father. The study reveals the negative effect of imprisoning father, which is more increased when the father is low educated and high-aged, on the family and its members. The negative effects are represented in low educational level and increased deviance of children and their reflections on the wife and her disposition. The study concludes a number of recommendations, including but not inclusive to set training courses for prisoners’ families that contribute in finding out stable resources of income for them, activate the role of the national association of caring prisoners, the released people, and their families as well as establishing branches for such associations in every prison in addition to create databases that include all prisoners’ families classifying their needs and ordering them by importance |
