Abstract |

The present study addresses the scholarly life in Al-Madinah Al-
Munawwarah in the Umayyad Period (41 – 132 A. H. 661 – 750 A.D. ) as
presented through Ibn Sa'ad's book "Al-Tabaqat Al-Kubra".The study begins by
giving a brief outline about the author of the book, his early life, his teachers (
Shiekhs ) and the methodology he follows in his book. Reference is made to
the factors which help in the development of the scholarly life in Madinah, such
as the care given by Caliphs, governors and prominent persons to scholars and
the paying out of their expenses to make it easy for them to publish their
works. The study also addresses the scholars' characteristics, ethics and patience
for the sake of acquiring knowledge and their academic journeys. It also
displays aspects of the scholarly activity in religious sciences such as Quranic
studies, interpretation of the Quran, Prophet's Sayings (Sunna) and
Jurisprudence towards which scholars contributed. A reference is also made to
the scholars' attitude towards the appearance of Islamic sects and how they
refuted these thoughts and suspicions. Aspects of the scholarly activity are also
discussed as they were presented by Ibn Sa'ad in his book, in areas such as
Arabic Language and History as well as the most prominent scholars in these
fields and their scholarly production. Scholars gatherings (Salons) in Madinah
such as governors palaces, scholars houses, elementary schools and mosques
and the role of their academic seminars in the dissemination of knowledge are
highlighted. Particularly, The prophet's Mosque is focused on because of the
significant role it played in enriching the scholarly activity in Madinah. In
addition, the study depicts the storytellers' activity in Madinah, its effect on
scholarly life, and the difference between this activity and scholars' gatherings.
Reference is made to the scholars' opinions about stories and the most
prominent storytellers in Madinah. Finally, the study clarifies the effect of the
boom in the scholarly activity in Madinah on other Islamic regions and scholarly
exchange between them. |
